Choose the Right Filter for Your HVAC System

Every single HVAC system in Denison, TX has a filter — without one, the air handler would quickly become covered in dust. The dust which would insulate the coils and drop the system’s efficiency to zero. Because they require various load calculations, filters are usually installed during system installation, but retrofits and upgrades are possible. There is no single best air filter for any system, and you’ll be able to select from numerous models based on cost, efficiency, indoor air quality, and durability.

Disposable Filters

Disposable filters are very affordable, and replacements can cost as little as a dollar or two depending on the model. However, they can only trap larger particles, so contaminants bacteria and other organic growth can easily pass through their fiberglass layers. These inexpensive HVAC air filters are most commonly found in baseline systems when dust removal is a priority, but you’ll need to replace them at least once every three months.

Washable Filters

Unlike fiberglass filters, washable filters are meant to be reused, but their strength is also their weakness. They actually work more efficiently when they start to trap particles, but once they capture too much dust and pollen, they will increase airflow resistance. However, washable filters have a higher MERV, or minimum efficiency reporting value, than disposable HVAC air filters. This means they can capture smaller particles like organic growth and pet dander.

Polyester Filters

High-end HVAC products benefit from polyester filters, which are more expensive than disposable filters but capture the largest variety of air contaminants including bacteria. With MERVs up to 15, some polyester filters are equivalent to filters found in hospitals. There are some types of particles, such as viruses, that only HEPA filters can trap, but HEPA filters aren’t compatible with most HVAC systems.
